Delores C. Halstead
Delores C. Halstead shows her close connection with natural settings in her vividly detailed wildlife paintings. At home in the country, she has an eye for the beauty and subtleties of native plants and seasonal effects. Her western wildlife scenes reveal her deep appreciation for animals and her understanding of their natural settings.
A lifetime of drawing has shown her gift for capturing her world in pictures, so she directed her education toward art. Delores earned an Associates of Art in Graphic Art in Omaha, Nebraska and enjoys commercial art work. However, when she found herself raising a family on the plains of eastern Wyoming, she focused her artistic energy on painting the natural scenes around her.
Painting nature is an extension of her family-centered interests in wildlife management and hunting. Her country backyard is home to a variety of pets, and the land surrounding her home is filled with subjects to spark her artistic vision. Drawings and paintings emerge from a small corner of her home, in spite of competition for her time from family and job. Her continuous series of completed artwork testifies to her intense commitment to keeping her artistic talent alive. She has adapted her art to fit the life she has chose on the Wyoming prairie, nurturing her talent with a variety of on-going projects the latest being a life sized fiberglass painted horse to be auctioned off to benefit the children within the 4H program.
She captures ideas for future works with her camera, keeping a collection of ideas to develop. She uses photographs to “see details that might have been missed,” but she uses artistic techniques to draw attention to nuances in background or lighting that a fleeting glimpse might not record. “Every time I focus on a subject I try to make the background as important as my subject.” She knows she has achieved her artistic goal when people ask, “Is this a painting or photo?”
Her most recent accomplishment was being chosen as Wyoming Ducks Unlimited 2005 Artist of the Year. Her work has also been seen on two Cabela's catalog covers. Their sportsman oriented marketing is a perfect match for Delores’s natural subjects. She has found a market for her ink drawings in American Trapper Magazine, based in Riverton, Wyoming. Her illustrations have been featured in Wyoming State brochures, as well as local diners, cafe's, and motels. Her professional goal now is to find a Publishing House to help her promote and sell her originals and prints. Currently she resides with her husband in Elgin, North Dakota.
